During the lunch-time, the attendees had a chance to meet about 16 environmental RIs that presented themselves during the so-called Science Fair. Last but not least, the event hosted an Award ceremony for the high school students who have participated in the Serious game developed by ENVRIplus project. We were happy to welcome 9 young students from Italy.

Long-term in situ marine observation, be it coastal or open sea, seafloor or water-column, is achieved by a variety of devices and systems operated by a number of teams meeting different demands in multiple contexts. In spite of this diversity, operators and users are facing a set of common constraints and have obvious benefits in sharing practices and means.

Under the auspices of the European Commission, JERICO-RI, EMSO ERIC and AtlantOS, are participating to the international effort to harmonize the practices of this domain and to push up the interoperability technologies for sharing ocean instruments:

• The Joint European Research Infrastructure Network For Coastal Observatories (JERICO-RI, www.jerico-ri.eu ) is a solid and transparent European network dedicated to providing operational services for the timely, continuous and sustainable delivery of high-quality environmental data and information products related to the marine environment in European coastal seas.
• The European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory European Research Infrastructure Consortium (EMSO ERIC, www.emso-eu.org ) is a distributed Research Infrastructure of marine observatories addressing natural hazards, climate change, and marine ecosystems in the service of science researchers, marine technology engineers, policymakers, and the public.
• AtlantOS (Optimising and Enhancing the Integrated Atlantic Ocean Observing Systems, www.atlantos-h2020.eu ) is a Blue Growth research and innovation project that proposes the integration of ocean observing activities across all disciplines for the Atlantic, considering European as well as non-European partners.

On the occasion of the Sea Tech Week 2018 in Brest (France) ( www.seatechweek.eu ), EMSO ERIC, JERICO-RI and AtlantOS are jointly proposing a 3-day workshop for technical and scientific staff, aiming to increase the level of marine observation practices.

Building on the results of previous similar interoperability workshops, the event will focus on:

• Sensor Web Enablement implementation,
• Cabled coastal observatories operations,
• Metrology of dissolved oxygen, pCO 2 and pH in the marine environment,
• Dissolved oxygen and temperature: seafloor and water column data, from a sensor to users.

Results

The first, still preliminary, data on the field measurements performed by using of GC equipment and two different laser-based instruments provide reliable and comparable results. 

Most of the participants are still carrying out laboratory measurements with their own instruments. The results will be later compared with those already obtained at INGV-Pa labs during the workshop.

An important issue raised during the analytical operations is the selection of appropriate mixing standards for the quantitative calibration of the instruments, which strongly depends on the type of sample (gas from the water column, gas from interface water table/atmosphere or atmospheric gases). This issue will be further discussed among the infrastructures and more comparative tests are planned.

What is ENVRI week?

ENVRI week is a week dedicated to Environmental Research Infrastructures. It is organized twice a year, in November and in May. ENVRI week hosts ENVRIplus project related sessions as well as several other sessions targeting different groups of stakeholders.

This ENVRI week will host a Joint workshop of ESFRI Environment Strategy Working Group and ENVRI community on Landscape of Environmental Research Infrastructures.

The event will be hosted by the University of Málaga, Málaga Chamber of Commerce & Málaga Municipality Authorities, co-organized in collaboration with LifeWatch ERIC through JRU LW.ES

To and From the Malaga Airport

Malaga airport is located 8 km from central Malaga.

A. Express Bus – Line A – Between Airport and Malaga

There is a new express bus between the airport and Malaga. This bus has only 7 intermediate stops between the two places and takes about 20 to 25 minutes and costs 2 euros. It is called the Linea A Express and the bus has luggage racks inside the bus. The bus runs everyday from the airport to the Plaza del General Torrijos (at the end of the Malaga park).

The bus from the airport to Malaga starts at 7:00H and ends at 24:00H, about every half hour.

Stops are at Avenida de Velazquez, La Hoz (Huelin market), Ayala (Los Arcos), Maria Zambrano Station, bus station, Avenida de Andalucia, Alameda Principal, Paseo del Parque, and Plaza del General Torrijos.

The bus from Plaza del General Torrijos to the airport starts at 6:25H and ends at 23:30H, about every half hour.

a. Maria Zambrano Station (Vialia) – Get off for Hotel Barcelo Malaga, Silken Puerta Malaga, Monte Malaga, Tryp Alameda.

B. Cercanias Train Between Airport and Malaga

Many arrivals now use the new Terminal 3 building.  The new airport station is now across the road from Terminal 3.

Follow the Train signs to reach the ticket machines. On the bottom left there is a multi language button which includes English., The Málaga side is clearly marked but you need the Fuengirola side for Torremolinos and benalmadena. Do buy your ticket before boarding or else risk a fine, and retain it for use at the exit turnstiles.   .  

All Malaga suburban trains will depart from and arrive at Malaga Centro Alameda, which is located by the Tetuan Bridge (Puente de Tetuan).  It is not the best place to arrive, unless you have a hotel or other known destination nearby, as it appears to be more of a utilitarian exit for locals. Maria Zambrano is the main transport interchange for Media Distancia and AVE trains and has a large taxi rank for Málaga hotels.

Hours:

From the airport to Malaga Centro Alameda – Runs from 06.44 to 00.24, every twenty minutes ( half hour after 22.54), and takes 15 minutes.

From Malaga Centro Alameda Station to the airport – Runs from 05:20 to 23:30H,  every twenty minuts and takes 11 minutes.

The station next to the Malaga Centro Alameda Station is the Maria Zambrano Station, which is the main station complex, near the bus station. This is the best destination when arriving in Malaga and is also serviced by a vast fleet of taxis.

A one way fare costs  

The distance between Maria Zambrano Station and downtown Calle Larios is 1 km.

C. Taxi

Price:

Rate 1* (weekdays from 06:00 to 22:00): per kilometre €0.84; waiting time per hour €18.47; minimum service starting at the airport €15.21.

Rate 2* (weekdays from 22:00 to 06:00, Saturdays and holidays): per kilometre €1.03; waiting time per hour €23.09; minimum service starting at the airport €19.01.

Supplement* to/from airport: €5.50; night-time (0:00 to 6:00), €2; origin/destination Levante port, €1; packages or suitcases larger than 60 cm, €0.45. During the August Festival and Holy Week, rate 2 will be applied.

A normal taxi fare from the airport to downtown Malaga costs about 20-30€.

The goal of the symposium is to present and discuss new scientific research in the area of global 4-D atmospheric composition, processes and trends based on the existing environmental research infrastructures IAGOS-CARIBIC and IAGOS-CORE, which use existing commercial aircraft instrumented with climate monitoring instrumentation.

The meeting will highlight new findings from the growing IAGOS data-base and through invited keynote speakers encourage new use of this scientific capability across the climate  community for future global modelling applications.
