The main focus of the ENVRIplus project during its last reporting period was on finalising the work that has been initiated during the previous two periods, making sure all the products, tools and services are delivered by its end. The end was initially scheduled for month 48, i.e. April 2019. There were, however, several reasons why the project consortium applied for an extension. Besides tasks that could not be achieved for different reasons in the given time, such as Methane observation cruise in the Baltic sea (WP4), or the further work on the joint ENVRI strategy (WP17), there were tasks going beyond the original Description of Action, suggested by the project reviewers. These activities were seen as very beneficial, but could not be implemented in the original time frame of the project. The final dissemination event in Brussels is a good example of such activity, and it had a huge impact on the dissemination of the project’s results. The extension was approved by the European Commission (EC) and allowed the project to continue its work until month 51, i.e. July 2019.

This 2019 Carbon summer workshop will provide an opportunity to learn how to use ‘big data’ from the Terrestrial Environmental Observatories (TERENO), National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) large networks of observatories while discussing an understanding of atmospheric, ecosystem, and below ground carbon processes, and the associated means to estimate CO2 and its role in the climate system. This Carbon summer workshop will also help develop the skills to access and use data in practice from a diversity of sources, including different networks. We will have a strong practical component that focuses on the data use.  Both the scientific understanding and the data use will be brought together in group exercises.

Jean-Daniel for sure doesn’t care so much,

It’s important to have technology as such.  

Data are an important yet difficult thing,

But there is a wizard his name is Zhiming.

We learned about provenance meta citation,

Ontologies, DOIs, and PIDs for curation

He may sound sometimes strange even like a yodel,

But it’s all for the sake of the reference model.

You may laugh now perhaps that’s not fair

On the other hand, don’t worry he will bring us there.

FAIRness for sure is the term of the season,

and for sure this is for a very good reason.

There is this planet our cozy homeplace,

Well, folks, this was my short introduction,

Theme 1! The floor is yours.

In recent years, one of the major challenges in the Environmental and Earth Science has been managing and searching larger volumes of data, collected across multiple disciplines. Many different standards, approaches, and tools have been developed to support the phases of the Data Lifecycle (Data Acquisition, Data Curation, Data Publishing, Data Processing and Data Use). In particular, modern semantic technologies provide a promising way to properly describe and interrelate different data sources in ways that reduce barriers to data discovery, integration, and exchange among biodiversity and ecosystem resources and researchers.

The course would focus on the specific Data FAIRness phase in the Environmental and Earth sciences. It is built as a five-day summer school where leading scientists will address this topic from different perspectives.

The attempt is to gather what we consider the most interesting perspectives of our time.

We offer a cutting edge and high-quality programme, aimed at fostering a rich and lively intellectual exchange.

Structure & schedule

The International Summer School will be organised in front lessons and workshop sessions. The main modules are:

• DATA MANAGEMENT in a nutshell
• to be FINDABLE
• to be ACCESSIBLE
• to be INTEROPERABLE
• to be REUSABLE

The summer school will use the LifeWatch ERIC training platform for all modules to accompany participants in the learning process and enabling the access to its resources and products.

Participants

The school is mainly addressed to staff working in the relevant international research infrastructures.

The school is also open to PhD students, Post-Docs and Master students about to start a Doctorate.

LifeWatch ERIC and ENVRIplus financially support accommodation (from 30 June to 6 July inclusive), lunches, a welcome and a social dinner for maximum 20 participants. Travel expenses will not be covered by the organisers.
